[ID: digital drawing, the ninth hour fanart drawn in red, white and black
It shows Beowulf from the front knees up with a big red wave rising behind her. Her arms are spread and she looks tired. She has a long shirt with a belt, pants and piece of armor on her shoulder. Her hair is braided on the sides and then tied in a ponytail and she has red make-up over her eyes. There are scratches on her nose and neck amd her fingertips are bloody. There's a text on the top of the drawing that says "I'll surrender to the tide let the water be my guide"

Hi all! My final project for college was this labor of love I spent about a year on. It's inspired by The Ninth Hour (https://www.ninthhourmusical.com/) which is criminally underrated.
Basically, it's a four minute long animated storyboard following Grendel post his final fight with Beowulf. I put a lot of work into it, and so please enjoy!
(Vocal performance by Shayfer James, lyrics by Shayfer James and Kate Douglas)

I definitely never saw myself making Beowulf art but I’ve been listening to a musical based on it and I’m very obsessed, so here we are. I actually got to see Shayfer sing one of the songs live and after that I was done for lol I’ve listened to the whole album a million times.
It has a lot of great symbolism that was a lot of fun to work from! There were a loooot of thumbnail sketches as I tried to figure out what I wanted to focus on — I might actually finish one of the ones I scrapped and make it a Beowulf-only poster design.
If you want to listen to it yourself:

Something something— Life is Beautiful (The Ninth Hour) describes a hero, who has only known the praise of the people they protect— only the sparkling eyes and the cries of ‘save us!’ — and have grown greedy with the premise of so much awe from others… while Life is Beautiful (The Owl and the Elephant) describes someone who has been trapped in a hole, for a grand portion of their life, and is looking up at the sunlight. They are hand in hand with their dearest companion, both covered in dust and dirt and their own blood but they’re ALIVE to see the world anew! These songs, with the same cascading chorus and mirroring verses— have such different meanings according to the albums and the singer, Kate Douglas versus Shayfer James. And just knowing the effort put into contrasting the elements of the songs— in this essay I will—!

Musical recommendation that is fully available and less than 50 minutes!
youtube
I just watched The Ninth Hour: The Beowulf Story (like I finished it thirty minutes ago), and I am utterly in awe of it.
The show starts with a coin flip meant to determine the actor who plays Beowulf and the one who plays Grendel. The stage is a church. The main actors have such a commanding presence. It has one of the most homoerotic songs I have ever heard between a man and a woman.
I highly recommend watching this performance. It's fully uploaded on the Met's YouTube page. It's phenomenal.

If I had a pound for every Beowulf musical adaptation which had themes of Beowulf living forever through the stories told and also forcing Beowulf to confront the similarities between him and Grendel I'd have two quid which isn't a lot but it's odd it's happened twice

...yall need Beowulf* so bad. this cycle, and these two characters, started A MILLENIA AND A HALF AGO and they havent changed and it gives me emotions that I cant even articulate.
Did you know that the first time this happened, Dean was Sam's mother.
Did you know she didn't have a name, she was only defined by her son.
Did you know that it happened exactly as you're describing and its been happening ever since
I'm in pain.
*the story, not the dude
"Sam's been running into burning buildings since he was, what, 12?"
That's Bobby's line to Dean in S5E21 "Two Minutes to Midnight," when he's trying to convince him to let his brother say "Yes" to Satan and jump into the firey pit.
He's been running into burning buildings since he was a tween, but Dean's been pulling him out of them since Sam was six months old.
That's their dynamic, at least for these first five seasons. Sam runs into a burning building (dies), Dean pulls him out (trades his own life to get him back). It's the one order of John's he's followed above all else. It's also the trust form of his need to keep his family safe, to not lose another one like he lost Mary.
And now he has to stand back and watch Sam run into the flames again

I think more tumblr lesbians should be obsessing about the ninth hour musical
Specifically, "punish you"
Like violent sexual tension, monsters, and the myth of beowulf. What's not to become a rabid beast for

"For this catastrophe."
"If we are to stay alive, then the beast cannot survive."
What They Want (Reprise).

"We have been warned time and time again."
"There is a lantern, shinning back upon this winter's day."
"And a castle in the corner of my eye."
"I am equal parts a criminal and king."
"And I was still to be the master of a fate."
"This is what I want."
"This is what I'm here for."
"This is who I am."
"This is what I came for."
"There is a river bank we sinners must ascend."
"I'd rather be someone who burns than someone who hesitates."
"I am equal parts a monster and a fool."
"And I was born to be a ruler of the cruel."
Fate Goes.
"I've been waiting for this moment to arrive."
"I can see you for the monster that you are."
"A predator in the dark."
"A beast without a heart."
"I've come for you."
"They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions."
"But I had none to start."
"So where am I then?"
"I will surrender to the tide."
"Let the water be my guide."
"I am a wave on the ocean wide."
"Fate goes, as ever fate must."
"Fate is the only one thats just."
"Fate I trust."
"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust."
"It's been written in the stars that you will fall."
"But I'm certain you won't go quietly."

"Fate goes."
"As ever fate must."
"The same as me."

"Peace has finally been restored."
"We will sing your praise forevermore."
"Thank god your bloody aim is true."
"Thank god our good king sent for you."
"Thank the lord, his will is done."
"You came and rescued everyone."
"I've sung this song a thousand times before."
"And I'll be made to sing it more."
"I've grown tired of this."
"Eye for eye, and limb for limb."
"The blood that I've been swimming in."
"Tell me there's another song."
"Tell me there's another."

back from a show and anyway stream The Ninth Hour by Kate Douglas and Shayfer James, consider seeing one of their upcoming performances in Atlanta, LA, or Chicago or watching the premiere at Met LiveArts in 2019, think some thoughts about adapting Beowulf
